You might have seen most product managers start scoping product features with a PRD. A PRD or a Product Requirements Document is an artifact which contains the basic functionality regarding a product, and serves as a way to communicate product features and prioritization decisions. It also includes key goals served by the product, user segments, expected results, success metrics(!!!), time to completion and technical requirements.
All this sounds great but what exactly are the benefits and/or disadvantages of building a PRD? Answer👇🏽
Helps provide the complete picture and assists PM assess challenges
Facilitates scoping time required
Managing expectations between stakeholders and engineering
Time intensive and cost intensive
What should a PRD contain?
Product Plan has published a good description for what a PRD needs to contain. For more details please refer to their blog
My Thoughts on PRD:
A PRD is an essential document before starting with your product. For me it is a must-have, as it not only helps me visualize the scale and assess risks, but also enables me to clarify expectations with my stakeholders. Another important purpose is to define the release criteria, and thereby limit any scope creep (I don’t know if you ever have faced a product scope blowing out of proportion when the release expectations are not set clearly, if you have then surely try the PRDs). Of late in designing products, I have seen and have been incorporating figma and mural for developing my PRD’s - it helps in building an effective PRD, however my recommendation will be to remember to keep the designs agile and not invest all time in perfecting your designs at the beginning.
While trying to build my PRD template, I have been doing research trying to find what all exists on the internet.
Below is a collection of the various PRD’s I have found. There might be more, if you find more, do add them to the comments, il keep this list updated. Thank you 🙏🏽
